Two gasoline engines and a diesel were available within the Jetta GLS model line. The GLS TDI received a turbocharged 1.9-liter diesel making 90 horsepower and 155 lb-ft torque. GLS 1.8T models are equipped with a turbocharged 1.8-liter gas engine making 150 horsepower and 162 lb-ft torque. The Jetta VR6 has a 2.8-liter V6 with 174 horsepower and 181 lb-ft torque.
The Jetta GLS uses a front engine, front-wheel drive configuration and is available with one of two transmissions. A five-speed manual is standard with a four-speed automatic with overdrive as an option. Suspension is independent up front with gas shocks and a semi-independent torsion beam setup in the rear.
