Specifications of 1997 Jaguar XJ

Launched in 1968, the Jaguar XJ series descended from the classic S-series, popular in the late '50s and early '60s. There were four types of XJ Jaguars: the basic XJ6, the Vanden Plas XJ6, which had an extended wheelbase, the XJ12 and the XJR. The 1997 models included the XJ6, the Vanden Plas and the XJR. The original manufacturer's suggested retail price for the standard XJ6 was $54,750, while the price for the Vanden Plas was $63,800 and the price for the XJR was $67,400. Kelley Blue Book prices as of October 2010 were $5,025 for the XJ6, $6,350 for the Vanden Plas and $6,625 for the XJR.


The standard engine in the XJ6 is 4.0 liters, and it has 245 horsepower and 289 foot-lbs. of torque. The Vanden Plas has the same engine, but the XJR has a 4.0-liter engine with 322 hp and 378 foot-lbs. of torque. The XJ6 and the Vanden Plas get 17 to 23 mpg, but the XJR only gets 12 to 20 mpg.


All models come standard with sunroof, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, leather seats, power seats, four doors, five seats, a cassette player and ABS brakes. The XJR comes with a CD player as well. The XJ6 and the XJR have a front headroom of 37.2 inches, while the Vanden Plas offers 37.8 inches. All models have front legroom of 41.2 inches, front shoulder room of 57.3 inches, and front hip room of 55.7 inches.


The XJ6 and XJR have a wheelbase of 113 inches with a total length of 197.8 inches, while the Vanden Plas as a wheelbase of 117.9 inches and total length of 202.8 inches. All models are 70.8 inches wide and 53 inches high. They have a ground clearance of 5.1 inches, and the distance between the tires is 59.1 inches in the front and 59.0 inches in the back. The XJ6 and XJR have a turning diameter of 39.7 feet, while the Vanden Plas has a turning diameter of 40.7 feet. The XJ6 and the Vanden Plas use 225/60R16 tires, while the XJR uses 255/45R17 tires.
