How to Install a Bed Extender on a Tacoma

Open the tailgate and unbolt the taillights from the bed using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Cut out the template provided with the bed extender kit with the scissors.

Align the templates to the bed pillars as per the directions on the tailgate and use the center punch to mark the holes from the template to the side of the bed. Drill holes on those marks using the drill and metal drill bits. Reinstall the taillights using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Repeat this process for the other side of the bed as well.

Bolt the bed extender mount from the bed extender kit to the sides of the bed using the provided hardware, allen key set and 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

Assemble the bed extender assembly by placing the two curved tube assemblies from the bed extender kit opposite each other and connecting them with the center tubing from the kit. Lift the assembly up so that the bed extender forms an arch and push it down into the mounts. Then drop the extender down to the tailgate.

Slide the vertical stanchions on the bed extender over the center tubing and secure in place using the 3/8 ratchet, torx-head sockets and the wedges provided in the bed extender kit.

The bed of your Toyota Tacoma is designed to haul all sorts of goods, but sometimes, it becomes necessary to carry larger items. Traditionally, people would just drop the tailgate and try to figure out a way to strap the item to the bed. But now, Toyota makes bed extenders, which are pivoting tubes that can contain items in the bed and pivot to keep groceries contained with the tailgate closed. This should take about an hour to install with basic tools.
