How to Replace the Taillights in a Dodge Intrepid

Shut off your Intrepid's engine and engage the emergency break.

Open the trunk by using the driver's side trunk release latch or by manually unlocking it.

Peel back the trunk liner to expose the wiring connector and taillight housing retainers.

Disconnect the wiring connector, undo the retainers and remove the taillight assembly from the car.

Twist the bulb socket counter-clockwise to remove it from the taillight assembly. Then, pull the malfunctioning bulb straight out of the socket.

Insert the replacement bulb directly into the empty socket and then twist the socket back into the taillight assembly.

Test the new light to make sure it's working. If everything checks out, reconnect the wiring connector, reinsert the retainers, replace the trunk lining and close the trunk.

Tips and Warnings

  • Treat the taillight bulbs with care. Dropping or cracking them can cause their internal gases to explode.
  • Keep the assembly retainers in your pocket after removing them from the car. This makes finding them easier when reassembling the taillight.
  • Avoid electrical shock by making sure your Intrepid's electrical systems are shut off before handling the bulb socket.
  • A broken taillight is a hazard to both you and other drivers on the road. Fortunately, with the right replacement bulb in hand, replacing the taillight on your Dodge Intrepid doesn't take long at all. It also doesn't require any special tools, so it's easy enough for most drivers to accomplish.
