How to Replace the Battery in a Nissan Pathfinder

Locate the battery on the driver's side near the front bumper.

Remove the negative cable first and then disconnect the positive cable from the battery terminal. Use pliers or a battery terminal puller.

Lift the battery out of the compartment. The battery is easy to reach, though it may be a little high for some people. Have someone nearby to help if you don't think you can lift the battery out clear of the bumper.

Keep your gloves on at all times to avoid getting acid on your hands. Safely dispose of the battery at an auto parts store or a recycling center.

Use a wire brush to clean the surface that holds the battery. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it dry.

Clean the insides of the connector cables with a pointed wire brush and dry them off with an old cloth you can throw away. Wear glasses or goggles to prevent acid from splashing in your eyes.

Place the new battery on the shelf. Attach the correct cable on each terminal and tighten it securely with pliers or a socket wrench.

Tips and Warnings

  • Never smoke when replacing a battery.
  • Wear gloves when handling the battery and the battery cables.
  • The Nissan Pathfinder is a sport utility vehicle works well as both a truck for hauling and a passenger vehicle. If you see a white, chalky substance on the battery, you should change it with a new 12-volt battery. Nissan recommends that you use genuine Nissan parts. You'll want to find one that fits in the space (see Resources).
