Collect the documents needed to apply for your learner's permit. As of September 2010 in New York City, you must supply proof of New York residence, a birth certificate and social security card. If you do not meet all of the identification requirements, a parent or legal guardian can fill out a MV-45 form to prove your identity. If you are between the ages of 16 and 18, a parent or guardian must sign consent on your form.
Visit your DMV office and bring your proof of identification and fill out the form. You must also undergo a vision test. Bring cash or a credit card to pay your application and driver license fee.
Take the written permit test. New York allows you to take the test as many times as you need to, if you do not pass. If you failed the test, try reading your manual again before you rewrite it.
Book a road test. Before you get your driver license, you must schedule a road test with the DMV. Your New York Learner's Permit is valid for 5 years.
