How to Clear a Salvage Title on a Rebuilt Car

1.

CHECK THE HISTORY YOURSELF

Run a vehicle history report on your own, to make sure the dealer entered your VIN in correctly.

2.

GET YOUR CAR INSPECTED

Have your car inspected. You will need a full inspection report to take with you to the DMV. Make sure the inspector knows that you are trying to prove the car was not salvaged, so he knows what to look for.

3.

THE DREADED DMV

Go to the DMV. You will need to fill out an "Application for Change of Title", showing the correct information. Supply your vehicle inspection and any other documents your state's DMV requests.

You will also need to complete an "Application For Supplemental Lien, Replacement Title, Transfer of Lien and Substitute Title".

There will also be a DMV Substitute Title fee around $10.

Tips and Warnings

  • Check with your state's DMV for exact documentation required.
  • Check online, the documents may be available online and you can save time by printing them and filling them out at home.
