How to Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit in Texas

Apply for a Permit

1.

Meet one of the Texas qualifications for impaired mobility or other disease or condition. Blue permits are issued for mobility impairment requiring a wheelchair, cane, brace or other assistive device. Red permits are for people with a debilitating health condition that impairs mobility.

2.

Go to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Web site, print out the disabled parking permit application and fill in the lower portion.

3.

Take the form to a licensed physician or other valid medical provider who can certify your condition and sign the upper "Disability Statement" portion of the application.

4.

Submit the completed application and payment for the nominal fee to your county tax office.

5.

Hang the placard from the rearview mirror when parking in a reserved parking space for the disabled.

Renew a Permit

1.

Go to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Web site, print the disabled parking permit application and complete the lower portion including your signature. Leave the Disability Statement from a physician blank.

2.

Submit the completed application, fee payment and the expiring permit or a copy of the original application to your county tax office.

Tips and Warnings

  • Permanent permits must be renewed every four years.
  • You may use your placard without owning or driving the vehicle you are in.
  • Red permits must park in red spaces unless the parking lot has only blue-colored spaces. Blue permits may park in red or blue spaces.
  • Do not lend the parking permit to anyone. Misuse of a parking permit is subject to a fine and may result in the placard being confiscated.
  • Do not leave the placard hanging on your rearview mirror while driving.
